Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about giving this Ramadan.

Zakat al-Fitr is a special charity that Muslims give right before the Eid al-Fitr holiday at the end of Ramadan. It’s like a final act of kindness to help everyone celebrate the festival, rich or poor. It cleanses the fast from any minor mistakes, careless words or shortcomings made during Ramadan.

Every Muslim adult pays for themselves and their family, like kids or elderly relatives. Approximately 5 pounds (2.5 KGs) of basic food such as rice, dates or wheat per person or the cash value around what that food costs locally.

Do it after sunset on the last day of Ramadan, before the morning Eid prayer. Paying a day or two early is fine too. Once done it fulfills an obligation and completes the fast of Ramadan and earns spiritual reward from Allah.
Fidyah is a form of charitable compensation in Islam. It is paid by a Muslim who cannot fast during Ramadan and has no reasonable hope of making up for the missed fasts later.
Fidyah applies when fasting is permanently or long-term impossible, such as the elderly, chronic or incurable illnesses and even those who are healthy but can be harmed if fasted.
Fidyah is for inability to fast (no fault, 1 poor person per fast, no make-up fasts required). Kaffarah is for serious violations (at fault, requires feeding 60 poor people, make-up fasts required).
Kaffarah is a mandatory expiation in Islamic law when intentionally breaking a fast in Ramadan without a valid excuse.
Authentically Kaffarah must be done in the following order (move to next only if unable): 1) Freeing a slave (not applicable today), 2) Fasting 60 consecutive days (missing a day resets the count), 3) Feeding 60 poor people one full meal each.
Zakat is calculated as 2.5% of your qualifying wealth (savings, gold, investments) that has been held for one lunar year. Use our Zakat calculator for an accurate calculation. If your total wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold (approximately $6,500 AUD), you are obligated to pay Zakat.
Yes! Penny Appeal Australia is a registered charity with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. All donations over $2 are tax-deductible in Australia. You’ll receive an instant tax receipt via email after your donation.
We distribute aid as quickly as possible. Ramadan food packs are delivered before and during Ramadan. Emergency relief is deployed within 24-72 hours. Zakat al-Fitr is distributed before Eid prayer to ensure families can celebrate.
With 10+ years serving the Ummah, we ensure your Zakat and Sadaqah reaches those in need. Administrative costs are covered separately by other funding sources, unless specified during collection, ensuring every dollar makes an impact.
